Scoring a pilot directed by Mike Disairo and produced by Melissa Rubin for the New York Television Festival Independent Pilot Competition.
Currently scoring a series of video episodes titled "Z.E.R.O.: War of the Dead," following the adventures of a ragtag paramilitary team of zombie-hunters. The series is produced by Spherewerx Media in association with Fangoria TV. Hear my theme music for the series.
Three of my pieces - Questiomic Physisludge, Unspecifiable Estrangement Ceaselessly Deferred, and Deserted Neighborhood - are included in a forthcoming Travel Channel documentary titled "40th Parallel ".
Just completed music for a film produced by Calvin Klein to showcase its Spring 2007 womenswear collection designed by CFDA Designer of the Year Francisco Costa. The film is being screened in Milan this week, and is directed by Chris Romero (will be posting highlights from the film here soon).
My piece Milkman comprises the soundtrack of a short film titled "Lord of the Rinks" by filmmaker Darren Roark, art director of Target's print and tv advertising Amy Demas, and producer Catherine Campion, included in the 2006 48-Hour Film Festival, Minneapolis.

I recently had the privilege of providing music for "The 2006 CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year Film", which is now available for download as a podcast from iTunes (click image at left for link).

The film was played on Monday, June 5th, 2006 in New York as part of the awards ceremony - often called "The Oscars of Fashion" - which included such fashion-loving celebrity presenters as Scarlett Johansson, Alicia Keys, John Legend and Lindsay Lohan, mixing with fashion names such as Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera, Karl Lagerfeld, Vera Wang, Proenza Schouler and Zac Posen (thanks to Adrian Romero for that description).

I worked closely with Chris Romero, the film's ingenious writer-director, to create a new version of my piece "Stonfluent Smansion" under very tight deadline pressure, about which he was kind enough to say in his own announcement, "Charles put in a huge effort and did an amazing job on the remix of his track with less than a day's notice. He is a hugely talented guy and I am extremely grateful." Back atcha, Chris. The music heard on a radio at the beginning of the film is by songwriter and killer guitarist Adrian Romero.

The penguins bury their dead, and march mournfully on against a red setting sun, their thoughts haunted and their motions numbed by the spectre that their journey has entered a sober, darker phase, with unknown perils await. Commissioned for Calvin Klein fashion film on Francisco Costa's spring 2007 womenswear line, directed by Chris Romero and edited by Will Znidaric of Mad River Post, with introductory guitar work by Adrian Romero. Hard-edged and industrial, designed to set the rhythm for uber-dramatic and disturbingly thin models draped in eyepopping couture to sling and pop those alien hips down the runway in search of something cold and exquisite and post-human, past rows of famous knees. All the tracks use combinations of Atmosphere, Trilogy, Spectrasonics Vocal Planet, Kontakt, Abysynth 3, Stylus RMX, EWQL Colossus, StormDrum, Vokator, and Alesis A6.

U-Bahn 1, 2006-18: Hard-edged dance music in 6/8. U-Bahn 2, 2006-19: Hardcore industrial with vocoded synth voice, unforgiving bass, and massive beat. U-Bahn 3, 2006-20: Tough deep chillout. Dolphins Under The Ice, 2006-11 Swirly bluesy electric Celt-folk meets stoner trance rock. Standing on a shore staring at a body of water too long, until it breaks your heart, or maybe you've just had too much coffee, or not enough, but whatever it is, it won't solve this thing in front of you. The Clotheslines Letting Go, 2006-10 Influenced by Happy Mondays. All the shirts, pants, dresses, and skirts are letting loose from their clothesline atop a green grassy hill and swirling off into a wide blue sky. Panoramic groove with searching guitar. Rudbeckia Praecox, 2006-9 Trippy and euphoric, as if in some kind of incandescent field of nonexistent daisies. Add fretwork of polished hexagons and stir. Yamaha VSS-30 toy sampler, Colossus, RA, Stylus RMX. Kosta Potamianos describes it thus: "The penguins are on the road again, future, flightless nomads with no destination, weighed down by all the strange and wondrous items they have scavenged from the dessicated mall -- it's a silent journey, as the sun sets and the moon rises, and they settle, exhausted and mute, into a luminous ravine, where water, duly apportioned, is to be had for all, and maybe a safe haven for a cozy night's rest. They pick and poke at the strange valuables they sighingly unload from their narrow, tuxedoed shoulders, as curiousity is overcome with exhaustion, and they fall asleep, like children beneath an xmas tree, amidst a heap of hastily unclad toys, and the moon lit upon them, promise them a nght's respite from danger and wonder."

Another School, 2006-7 Dissonant, rhythmic, intense, compressed, and jazzy, with a great big finish. EWQL SO Gold XP, Colossus, RA, Kick Ass Brass, Stylus RMX. In retrospect, the story of a delinquent youth not unlike Jim Carroll in The Basketball Diaries but not so druggy, having been expelled from one school for his bad behavior and enrolled in another where his education will soon prove equally hopeless. We experience his miscreant vigor, the weird heady violent delight of having balls in a world too small and too rigid to contain them. Seen on a staff, the notes would be wearing boxing gloves.
Stonfluent Smansion - Exotica Version, 2005-32b Get-outa-here nutty. A new version of Stonfluent Smansion with the production ante vastly upped and the attitude changed from bad-trippy to wacky-trippy-go-Hawaii-wacka-wacka-boom. Watch out for the big finish. EWQL SO Gold XP, Colossus, RA, Stormdrum, Trilogy, Stylus RMX. Kosta Potamianos describes it thus: "The penguins have gotten braver --- they are beginning to indulge their curiousity and wonder and poke around at all the strange marvelous objects that the future abandoned mall they've stumbled across avails them. They are getting into the spirit of an imagined groovines of a culture they have no access to, donning their clothes -- sunglasses, summerwear -- trying to figure the functioning of shiny, and technologically mysterious inventions --- utterly uncomprehending, but surprisingly spot on at times clumsily turning over cell phones and such twixt the ignorant flaps of the flippers."

Kosta Potamianos describes it thus: "The narrative is picking up, it seems. The penguins are getting restless. They've come across some interesting foodstuffs in a locked cabinet marked "Warning!" in a dilapidated surfshop inside the abandoned mall. A number of them, being hungry, and not knowing how to read, have partaken of the strange, fluorescent powder they find, and are beginning to act strangely, waddling around the surfshop loopily, squawking at each other lustily, and trying on sunglasses."

Canyon, 2006-5 Kosta Potamianos describes it thus: "Nice. The penguins have exited the future abandoned mall and come upon a kind of edenic, Shangrila garden, with brooks and dales and streams and lush growth and even marvelous, impossible manifestations of blocks of ice and woodland animals heretofore thought extinct. Now you need to write one that describes their fantastic journey from Antarctica, through timespace, to this future dystopia of a mostly abandoned planet that they've returned to." Kosta's persuasive mythology aside, it's a bittersweet piece for solo violin and orchestra. Synful Orchestra, EWQL SO Gold XP Pro.
Dark Blue Rafters, 2006-4 A moody rocker theme. All fake rock band: Colossus guitars, Trilogy bass, Stylus RMX and BFD drums.

Reservoir - Alt. Ver.: Violin and Trumpet Solos, 2006-2b More traditional and "serious" B-side version of the piece above, with its heart further out on its sleeve. Somewhat Gaelic violin with somewhat "Sketches of Spain" trumpet mood. Synful Orchestra, EWQL SO Gold Pro XP, Colossus, Kontakt, Trilogy.
Gold Nuclei, 2006-1 Very rhythmic, syncopated, and intense piece for chamber orchestra, piano, and percussion, with solo violin sawing away like mad on top against supporting solo viola and cello parts. Synful, EWQL SO Gold Pro XP.

The Thousand Emptying Spins, 2005 - 38 Abstract structure, mysterio feel. Atmosphere, Cwejman S1 Mk2, EWQL SO Gold Pro XP, Colossus, RA, Cameleon 5000, Kontakt, Reaktor, RD700. Yes, all of those.
Vermona Perfourmer Demo: Kalt Nótt, 2005 - 37 Short all- Vermona Perfourmer demo recorded in one pass, with Stylus RMX drums. The Perfourmer is set to Poly mode, with voices 1-3 set to MIDI channel 1 in different patches and pannings, voice 1 tuned an octave up, taking turns playing arpeggiated notes or combining in chords, while voice 4 is set to MIDI channel 2 and covering the bassline.

Sudden Archipelagos for String Sextet, 2005 - 36 Zippy piece for string sextet - two violins, two violas, cello, and double bass. Mostly EWQL SO Gold XP Pro, fast runs in the middle done using Synful Orchestra. In four quick sections, named here for no good reason at all in Italian: Allegro, Adagio sentito, Allegro capriccioso, Allegro ritornello.
Sudden Archipelagos, 2005 - 35 Shorter, technoish version of the main theme of the eponymous string piece, mostly Atmosphere, with Trilogy, Stylus RMX, and Camel Space filtering and gating. MX4 Melody line. Not a genuine analog synth in the joint.
Tywodfryn Ffynidwydden, 2005 - 34 Remixed 11/24. Very slow and ambient. Blend of electronic, orchestral, and choral. Cameleon 5000, EWQL Symphonic Choirs, EWQL SO, Atmosphere, Trilogy, MX4.

Blast from the past. A 1990 oldie but goodie recently digitized from cassette. Played and whistled direct onto a 4-track Tascam Porta One in my wee rented room uptown. Roland RD-300 piano, Roland JX-8P bass, Art ProVerb, HR-16 drum machine, and me whistling into the mic that came with the Portastudio.
